The Group Committee plays a crucial role in:
- Supporting the delivery of the Scouting program
- Managing Group funding, property, and equipment
The Group Support Committee in Scouts Australia manages the business, financial, and physical operations of a Scout group—specifically handling finance, property maintenance, and resource allocation—so that uniformed leaders can focus entirely on delivering the youth programme. Group Committees typically meet monthly to discuss important matters related to running the Group and maintaining its property and equipment. Their efforts help create a supportive and well-equipped environment for all Scouts.
The composition of each committee can reflect the circumstances in each group, but may consist of:
- Chairperson
- Secretary/Treasurer
- Membership Officer
- Communications Officer
- Quartermaster, and
- Hall Hire Officer
Often, some of these roles will be shared by one person, depending on the number of volunteers and the skills and interests.
In some ways, a scout group is a not-for-profit franchise business. Apart from membership fees, hall hire can be a major source of stable financial income to maintain the hall and support the scouting activities with equipment purchases and to subsidise activities. The Support Committee can contribute to the smooth running of the group by managing the running of this part of the operation. A clean well maintained hall is not only welcoming for scouts, but also for other community groups who may wish to hire it.
